How to Calculate Tile
Calculate tile area, tile count, waste allowance, and box count for a room or floor section.
Open Tile CalculatorMeasure floor area
Multiply room length by room width for square feet. For bathrooms, closets, or kitchens with offsets, split the room into rectangles and add the areas.
Convert tile size
Tile dimensions are usually listed in inches. Convert each side to feet before calculating tile area, or use a calculator that does the conversion.
Round by box coverage
Tile is commonly sold by box. After adding waste, divide the adjusted area by box coverage and round up to whole boxes.
Use The Calculator With This Guide
This guide explains the measuring method, while the Tile Calculator turns the same measurements into project quantities, waste-adjusted results, and a copyable shopping list. Use the guide first when you are deciding what to measure, then use the calculator when you are ready to compare material amounts.

Formula Reference
Floor area = room_length × room_width
Tile area = tile_length_ft × tile_width_ft
Tiles = floor_area / tile_area
Boxes = adjusted_floor_area / box_coverage
FAQ
Why is tile waste important?
Cuts, breakage, layout direction, and future repairs all require extra tile beyond exact floor area.
Should diagonal tile use more waste?
Usually yes. Diagonal layouts and complex patterns tend to produce more cut pieces.
