Measurement

Square Footage Calculator

Choose a shape and enter dimensions to convert project area into square feet, square yards, and square meters.

Planning estimate

This calculator provides a planning estimate only. Material coverage, compaction, waste, surface conditions, product yield, and installation methods can change the final quantity needed. Always check the product label and local supplier guidance before purchasing materials.

How To Use This Calculator

  1. Step 1 Pick the shape that best matches the project area. For irregular rooms, calculate several simple shapes and add the results.
  2. Step 2 Keep all dimensions in feet. Convert inches to feet before entering measurements when needed.
  3. Step 3 Use the square-foot result as the starting point for material calculators that also need depth, coverage, or waste.

What The Result Means

The square-footage result converts the same measured area into square feet, square yards, and square meters. This helps compare flooring, tile, landscape, and metric product labels without remeasuring.

After measuring the area, open the concrete, mulch, gravel, paint, or tile calculator that matches the material you plan to buy.

Before You Buy

  • Measure along the actual edges of the room or project area, not only from a plan drawing.
  • Round dimensions conservatively before calculating materials that are cut to fit.
  • Separate floor area from wall area; paint usually needs wall area, not floor area.
  • Record the shape breakdown so you can recheck the estimate later.

Accuracy Notes

  • An L-shape should subtract the missing rectangle from the outer rectangle.
  • Curved and angled spaces are more accurate when split into smaller shapes.
  • Material waste should be added in the material-specific calculator.

Formula

Rectangle area = length × width

Triangle area = base × height / 2

Circle area = π × radius²

L-shape area = outer_rectangle - cutout_rectangle

Example Project

A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 120 square feet, 13.33 square yards, or 11.15 square meters.

Waste Factor

Area tools do not add waste by themselves. Add the waste factor in the material calculator for concrete, mulch, paint, tile, or gravel.

Unit Notes

The calculator reports area in square feet, square yards, and square meters so you can compare product labels.

Common Mistakes

  • Measuring only one side of an L-shaped room.
  • Mixing feet and inches without converting.
  • Using floor area for wall paint without accounting for wall height.

FAQ

How do I measure an irregular room?

Break the room into rectangles, triangles, or circles, calculate each area, then add the results.

Is square footage the same as floor area?

For flooring and tile, yes. For paint, you usually need wall area instead of floor area.
